Meals from the Heartland – Twelve members of the Rippey United Methodist Church helped pack food bags for Meals from the Heartland in West Des Moines on May 5. They filled each food bag with soy meal, powdered vitamins, dehydrated vegetables and rice, which will feed six people. Twenty boxes, containing 36 bags in each, were completed by the group.
The 720 bags will feed 4,320 meals. Ten percent of the meals packaged stays in Iowa and the other 90 percent goes throughout the U.S. and other countries in the world. Meals from the Heartland is an Iowa organization. The ingredients for the food bags come from Iowa, Arkansas, and Wisconsin. Ten dollars will pay for fifty meals.
Raising money for and working at the Meals from the Heartland was the 2016-2017 Sunday school project for the Rippey UMC. We were able to present $803 to the project.
Rippey Ladies Aid Guest Day – The Rippey Methodist Ladies held their annual Guest Day on Thursday, May 4. A total of 75 ladies and gents attended from Methodist and other congregations throughout the county.
Following a brunch of assorted sweet breads, juice and coffee, the group gathered in the sanctuary for the welcome and program. This year’s theme was “Prayer” and included The Prayer of Jabez, Hannah’s Prayer and Mary’s Prayer taken from the Bible and narrated by Nancy Burrow, Connie Neese and Marilyn Heater. Several selections were sung by the Rippey choir directed by Dick Bardole and accompanied by Midge Vannatta. Dick also sang “The Lord’s Prayer” for the program. Other narrators were Phyllis Bardole, who led the group in singing four hymns to illustrate the acronym P.R.A.Y., and Toni Roberts, who gave the welcome and read a humorous selection on “Methodists,” written by Garrison Keillor.
The finale was a skit entitled “Don’t Interrupt Me, Lord, I’m Praying” enacted by Jo and Dick Bardole.
A surprise addition to the Rippey choir was former minister Pastor Deb Parkinson of Manson. She and her mom, Barb, came to visit with old friends. It was a great ending to a great day!
Rippey Lions Club – The Rippey Lions Club met May 4 for their regular meeting with a potluck meal along with guests Chris Henning and Bob Rye.
Events for the summer were discussed. Music on Main Street programs will be planned for July and August. There will be a concert on June 24 with the Town and Country Band sponsored by the Friends of Rippey to support renovation at the Rippey ballpark. Mark Devilbiss and Dale Hanaman will work on trees to be planted for the 100th anniversary of Lions Clubs and the location of playground equipment.
Chris Henning and Bob Rye presented the program, “Pumas, Penguins and Pinnacles,” a wildlife adventure with tour leader Bob Pease. In addition to a brief visit to Santiago, Chile, and also to a town where they shared a picture of a Lions Club sign, they traveled to remote areas to view pumas and observed many varieties of rare birds on long hiking trips. Their travels took them from mountain and desert areas to frigid Tierra del Fuego to view King penguins. They returned from the remote areas to Santiago before their flight back to the United States.
The next meeting will be on May 18 at 7 pm. Dick Bardole is in charge of the program.

Mother’s Day card craft with the kids on May 10 at 3:30. The kids will put together and design tag cards for their mothers.
News in and around Rippey –Dale and Nancy Hanaman traveled to Pella for the annual tulip festival accompanied by Dale’s cousin and wife, Ken and Linda Osborn ofJanesville, WI. They enjoyed the burst of color with the tulip blossoms. Before the parade, they watched a dedicated group washing the street before the queen and her court arrived. The precision street dancers filled the area in front of the grandstand. The tasty Dutch letters were an added treat.
Virgene Morse traveled to Madrid on Sunday morning to attend church with the Terry and Diane Ostendorf family. Madelyn Ostendorf, who has been part of the youth group for four years, gave the sermon. The youth are very active in their church and will be part of the volunteer pool of people who will be taking turns conducting church services for their minister, who is taking a 12 week sabbatical this summer. Others attending were Michaela and Ben Ostendorf and Annika Lewis. Virgene enjoyed lunch with the family before returning home.
